Why Smartphones Prices are Surging: Is the Era of Affordable Smartphones Ending?

Posted by TechnoDG on 6 hour(s) ago .

For decades, the price of smartphones has reduced as technology advances. But now, the technology is no longer cheap, the prices of smartphones have surged with no major upgrades, disrupting the budgets of Middle-class people. The prices of existing smartphones models have increased by 15% this year, while the new launches have roughly 25% more price hike then last year. In fact, there are no smartphones of prices ranging from Rs.10,000 to Rs.12,000 in the market.

The reason behind the price hike

The main reason behind the high price of smartphones is the Memory Chip prices. The memory that earlier contributed 12% towards a smartphone now has gone up to almost 45%. This has cost the entry-level phones at the worst hit. The Memory that previously cost 20 US dollars, today cost 100 -130 US dollars.

The Memory chips – DRAM (Dynamic Random Access Memory) and NAND memory chips have become very much expensive. The reason is the boom of Artificial Intelligence, as the AI companies are buying a different type of memory in large quantities – high-bandwidth memory (HBM) used in data centers run by firms like Nvidia. Companies that make Memory chips are now shifting their production to serve AI demand. As HBM chips gives them far higher profit then regular smartphone memory. This leaves fewer chips for phones, causing the prices of DRAM and NAND to increase by 50-60 per cent in some cases.

The high-priced semiconductors, market supply-demand imbalance and the much need for high-performance computing have cost rapid rise in smartphone prices. This is called an “AI tax” on smartphones by the industry Insiders. This AI Tax and big tech dominance has acted as primary driver for price hike in smartphones. 90 per cent of the global memory chip market is controlled by these three companies; Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron. And Companies like OpenAI, Google, and Meta are racing to build massive AI data centers, these centers require specialized high-performance chips like HBM (high Bandwidth Memory) and NAND enterprise-grade chips.

External pressures like weak rupee and global trade also caused the price increase of smartphones, as the Indian rupee continuously fell against US Dollar.

Disappearance of 10K -12K phones

Today, building a 5G phone under budget of Rs.10,000 to Rs.12,000 is economically not possible. The market sweet spot has now shifted to Rs.14,000 to Rs.15,000. Even budget-focused brands like Lava, Infinix, techno are forced to raise prices due to heavy dependency on overseas silicon chips.

The smartphone market is reshaping itself

Amidst declining sales, the smartphone Industry is shifting its strategy to maintain its profit. Due to sever supply strains, the global smartphone shipment was dropped by 12.2%. But the total revenue was still managed to grow because the average selling price was increased from Rs.22,000 in 2025 to Rs.25,000 in 2026. Companies are selling fewer but much more expensive and premium phones.

As there is no 5G phone under budget of Rs.10,000 to Rs.12,000, Refurbished and second-hand Market are flourishing. Consumers are repairing their old smartphones instead of buying a new one. They are increasingly opting for 2-year-old flagship models, instead of buying a Rs.15,000 mid-range phone with compromised features. Re-commerce Platforms like Cashify are seeing massive growth as a direct result.

Conclusion

Consumers should not expect any relief, as the smartphones prices are not expected to drop significantly until 2027 or 2028, as building new memory chip factories requires billions of dollars and several years.  So, the consumers must hold on to their current phones for longer years or shift towards a second-hand market.

Interestingly, premium brands like Apple and Samsung’s flagship S-series are placed better. Their buyers are less price-sensitive and the brands also have stronger control over supply chains. So, only the budget buyers feel the heat while premium buyers remain unaffected.
