Google begins to show ads in AI Mode, extends AI Overview ads to desktop search:

Google announced, it will begin to show ads to users directly within AI mode in search, just a week after expanding access to the new search experience to all users in the US.

The technology company also said, it is enlarging ads to desktop users of AI overviews, the artificial intelligence summaries of search results that appears at the top of google search.

Though, some users had noticed ads appearing earlier in both AI mode and AI overviews, google formally announced its launch at the marketing live 2025 event, which took place a day after the opening keynote at the company annual I/O developer conference.
Internal google data reveals that individuals have been finding the ads within AI overviews helpful because they can easily link up with applicable businesses, products and services to take next step at the exact moment they need them," the company stated in a search document.

At google marketing live, the Alphabet-owned company showcased new AI-driven solutions for advertisement as well as the newest advertising features it was developing.

Google's rivals in the AI race like Perplexity, OpenAI, and Microsoft have tested or are planning to test with ads in their own AI products.  Meanwhile, publishers and content creators have debated that google's shift toward AI-driven search results could eat into their traffic and threaten ad revenue.

These developments come in between two major antitrust challenges in the US, where the company has been found guilty of illegally monopolising the search and advertising market on the internet. Following these landmark antitrust verdicts, Google now has to confront the possibility of its search and advertising businesses being splitted, that have been pursued by the US government.

The ads will appear where?

In AI mode, the ads will probably display "where relevant" below and "integrated into" the AI-generated responses. AI mode allows users to ask a question and receive an AI-answered reply with the relevant information and links to websites. 

AI mode is not the same as AI overviews, which is an existing feature in google search that shows users AI-written summaries of search results. While AI overviews is a block of text that sits on top of its traditional google search web pages with blue links, clicking the AI mode tab will take users to a completely different section where the search experience is end-to-end.

Ads are added in the AI-generated summaries in AI overviews "when relevant to both the query and response provided." They will probably be marked as sponsored,  according to the google.
