Meta introduces Muse Code beta with multi-agent AI for software development

Meta is launching its first coding agent called Muse Code. The company hopes this will help it compete with leading AI companies like Anthropic and OpenAI. Muse Code is the latest major project from Meta’s AI chief Alexandr Wang. He leads Meta Superintelligence Labs and is in charge of developing the company’s main AI models. Wang joined Meta in June 2025. He became an important part of CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s plan to improve Meta’s AI strategy. Alexandr Wang, who is the chief AI officer leading Meta Superintelligence Labs said in an interview that, “You can install it with one command and then use it to take on complete software engineering tasks across a wide variety of use cases, planning changes, writing code, validating the results.”

The new coding agent is also part of Zuckerberg’s plan to make money from AI. Meta is spending a lot of money on data centers and other computer systems to support its AI work. Meta’s stock price fell after the company gave a weaker revenue forecast. It also reported that its free cash flow had dropped in the second quarter. The new tool is similar to Anthropic’s Claude and OpenAI’s Codex. It helps people build apps more easily in one place. Secondly it also lets users manage AI agents that can help with different parts of software development. Muse Code is currently available as a preview and works with Meta’s latest AI model, Muse Spark 1.2. Alexandr Wang did not share how many people are using the Muse Spark models but he said the response from users has been strong.

Wang said that Muse Spark 1.2 was developed and trained together with Muse Code. This helps the tool perform better when it comes to coding. Developers can use Muse Code by paying only for what they use. Wang said there is also a cheaper option for users who want to spend less. This cheaper plan costs more than 10 times less than the regular pay as you go plan. However, developers who choose this plan must agree to let Meta use their data to help improve the AI model. Wang said Meta is mainly competing with Anthropic and OpenAI by offering its AI coding tools at a lower price rather than by having more features. Muse Code also has a special system called a “harness.” It helps developers manage AI models that are designed for coding projects.

Wang said users can access and pay for Muse Code through the same Meta developer website where the company provides access to its Muse Spark AI model API. Meta’s new AI model will also be available on the Open Router platform. Lastly, Wang said that “Meta is also starting to accept requests for zero data retention,” meaning that the company wouldn’t retain developer data to improve models. He said it represents “a big enterprise feature that is important for folks.” Meta gets 98% of its revenue from online ads, a market it dominates by targeting consumers based on user data.
