India ready to work magic of UPI with AI:

Posted by TechnoDG on 8 hour(s) ago .

The time is right for reforms in India's  "UPI moment" in artificial intelligence and a complete AI stake built as a digital public infrastructure (DPI) will assist in taking AI to the masses, the industry leaders and policymakers. Speaking at the third edition of The Economic Times Digital Transformation Dialogues in New Delhi, experts sought regulations to ensure trust and accountability without repressing innovation. While concerns on unemployment remained, education and entrepreneurship could be solution to combat this, they said in a conversation moderated by ET's Dia Rekhi.

"We need to at some point think of developing a full AI stack as a DPI.  I think then we can see a real development of AI to end users in India," said Rajendra Kumar, secretary (border management) at Minister of Home Affairs (MHA). He observed that this model would allow both startups and government departments to develop use cases and launch applications faster without having the burden of building their own compute or training their own models.

Sunil Gupta, Co-founder and CEO of Yotto Infrastructure, agreed: "We're all waiting for the UPI (unified payments interface) moment to happen in AI now. All the enabling factors in India are there." He pointed out that India has low-cost, abundant graphics processing units (GPU) infrastructure for startups and researchers for model training and initiating an 'inference wave.' Inference is  an process of an AI model making a prediction or solve a task based on data it was trained on.

Gupta says, "AI use cases, if you are able to bring to Indian masses at no value or very low value - that is how we as Indians consume - it is going to boost on population scale." This kind of time is probably "coming very fast," he noted, as AI initiatives in areas like healthcare, agriculture, and education are already being started.

The Agentic AI Era
Among the most trend controversies, according to the panelists, is the emergence of agentic AI, the growing systems capable of making autonomous decisions. "The hype is absolutely real and gets better and better every day," said Sanket Atal, the managing director of Salesforce India operations. "Today, we do more than a trillion transactions - whether it's predictable or generative - every week around the world. With that came copilots. etc. And today, we are right in the age of agentic. Agentic just ties everything together."

Atal said that, it is the data which remains the core of AI, which is why Salesforce is investing in the tools like its Data Cloud, which enables bringing the data all together. "That establishes an awesome foundation to create agents and have everybody leveraging AI," he added.

Besides enterprises like Salesforce, quite a number of startups are also placing large bets on these agents. Ankush Sabharwal, founder and CEO of Corover AI, said that with BharatGPT platform, developers have built 3,500 AI agents. "We should not have FOMO of using and force-feeding the new technology." Currently, the AI agent cost is more than the actual physical agent."
