Meta Platforms is introducing new parental control features that allow parents to monitor how teenagers interact with AI on Facebook and Instagram.

Meta has launched a new tool for parents. It lets them see the main topics their teens have talked about with Meta AI on Instagram, Messenger, and Facebook. AI can be helpful, but if kids start depending on it for homework or use it to share their feelings and emotions all the time, it can be risky, because they might not fully understand its limits yet. Meta is trying to deal with this issue. Recently, the tech giant has introduced newparental supervision tools for parents so they can see what kind of conversations their teens are having with its AI assistant. There’s also a new “Insights” tab where parents can check the topics their teens have asked Meta about in the last seven days.

Right now, this new supervision tools are only available in few countries like the US, UK, Australia, Canada, and Brazil. As for India, it is expected to make its way in the coming weeks alongside the global release.

The feature is now available in some countries like US, UK, Australia, Canada and Brazil on Meta apps like Facebook, Messenger, and Instagram. But it has limits. Instead of showing full chats history, it only shows general topics like school, entertainment, lifestyle, and health. This helps parents understand what their teens are doing while still keeping their privacy safe. Meta says this update is part of its effort to make AI safer and more suitable for younger users. The AI follows rules similar to 13+ movie ratings, so it may not answer some sensitive questions directly. However, parents can still see what topics were asked about through the Insights tab.

The company is also adding more safety features. For example, parents may get alerts if teens try to talk about self-harm or suicide. The goal is to help parents keep a better eye on things and make online spaces safer for teens. Meta has teamed up with experts to help parents talk to their teens about AI. They’ve created simple conversation starters and guided questions to make these talks open and judgment free. Parents can find these resources in the Family Center.

Meta has also introduced a new AI Wellbeing Expert Council. This group includes experts in mental health, youth safety, and responsible AI. They will keep giving feedback to help make AI safer and better for teens.
