Anthropic Blocks Possible Misuse of AI for Biological Weapons

In September 2026, Anthropic released a report about people misusing its AI models. The company said it had blocked several accounts after discovering that some people were trying to use Claude to find information that could help in making biological weapons. Anthropic also said, it had found several types of harmful activity involving its AI models between December 2025 and August 2026. These included cyber attacks, online scams, surveillance, propaganda, fraud, and attempts to get information related to biological weapons.

Anthropic talked about five cases where people used Claude in ways that could possibly help with making biological weapons. The company said that this is one of the most serious risks that can come from powerful AI. It has also warned that if AI systems do not have strong safety controls, this type of misuse could cause serious harm. The report also talked about other concerning cases. Some people used Claude to make fake dating apps and scams involving hotel Wi-Fi. Anthropic said that some Chinese AI companies had tried to copy or recreate Claude’s abilities.

Google has reported similar concerns too. The company said that someone tried to use its AI system, Gemini to get a detailed, step-by-step guide on how to make biological agents that could be used as weapons. These reports have increased concerns about the risks of advanced AI. US Senator Bernie Sanders has also called for a pause in advanced AI development and supported a ban on artificial superintelligence. Anthropic said that most of the harmful activities involved its Claude Haiku, Sonnet, and Opus models. The company said its newer Claude Fable and Mythos models were not involved in these cases, except for one case involving “distillation.” This is when a smaller AI model is trained using the knowledge or abilities of a larger AI model.

Overall, the report shows that AI tools can be used for many different purposes, including some that could cause serious harm. Anthropic said stronger safety measures are needed to stop powerful AI systems from being misused especially for things related to biological weapons.
