Why Are Mathematicians Calling for a Boycott of OpenAI?

Posted by TechnoDG on 2 hour(s) ago .

The Association for Human Mathematics (AHM) has called on mathematicians and researchers to boycott OpenAI after the company released hundreds of AI generated mathematical research papers. On October 6th 2026, OpenAI shared a large collection of research papers on GitHub. The collection had solutions to hundreds of maths problems that had not been solved before. It was covering topics like, number theory and algebraic geometry. This came after an earlier claim in September 2026 that an internal AI model had solved a problem related to the Navier Stokes equations. However, the move has raised concerns among mathematicians. The AHM said that "Mathematicians did not ask for this work to be done". It also described the release as a "demonstration of power" rather than a genuine contribution to mathematical research.

One major concern is that AI companies are using their own models to solve difficult mathematical problems without enough human involvement. The Advisory Group on Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence which is an independent group hosted by the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton has also warned about the risks. In a statement released on September 29th 2026, the group said AI could produce mathematical arguments that researchers might struggle to understand, check or take responsibility for. Some of the critics also say that OpenAI released a large number of results without giving mathematicians enough time to review them properly. Some of the proofs are extremely complex and difficult for humans to follow. Others may not have been fully checked using formal tools such as Lean, a programming language that helps computers verify mathematical proofs.

Another worry Mathematicians Calling for a Boycott of OpenAI is that powerful technology companies can gain an unfair advantage over universities and traditional research institutions. Meanwhile, OpenAI says it has consulted the advisory group and considered its advice and public recommendations before releasing the results. The company published the research on GitHub and included formal versions of many proofs in Lean so that computers could check them.

OpenAI also shared 10 summaries explaining the model's reasoning, along with details about how many problems it attempted and how much computing power it used. According to the company, an average result required computing equivalent to around three hours of ChatGPT Pro thinking. Despite these steps, the release has sparked a wider debate about the role of AI in mathematics, the need for proper verification and whether producing a large number of solutions is enough to count as meaningful scientific progress.
