Meta glasses wearers hit with paywall to use built-in feature

Posted by TechnoDG on 3 hour(s) ago .

Meta has recently expanded its partnership with the Italian eyewear company RayBan to launch more Meta smart glasses. The glasses start at 269 pound in the UK and 299 dollar in the US. Additionally, Meta has also announced that users of its AI smart glasses will now have to pay a monthly subscription to keep using a feature that was previously free. The feature called Conversation Focus helps users hear the person they are talking to more clearly by using the microphones on the glasses. Users can use it for free for up to three hours each month. After that they must pay 19.99 dollar per month to continue using it. Users who subscribe to Meta One Premium can use the Conversation Focus feature for up to 15 hours per month. If they do not subscribe then they will have to wait until the next month for their free hours to reset. Meta did not give a detailed explanation for the change. However, a company spokesperson said it is testing paid subscriptions for some extra features while keeping the main services free. The company had already announced in January that it planned to test premium subscription features across Instagram, Facebook, and Whats-app.

A Meta spokesperson said that users will still be able to use other built-in AI features, such as live translation and the voice assistant, without paying for a subscription. However, Meta One Premium is only available in a few countries and is not yet offered in the UK.Some users are unhappy with the change. One user wrote to Meta Ray-Ban product lead David Woodland, saying that "I would gladly subscribe to Meta One, but only if it genuinely offers unlimited access." A Meta spokesperson said that most people who use its AI glasses will not be affected by the new subscription plan because they do not use the Conversation Focus feature for long periods. The spokesperson also said that the subscription is mainly for heavy users who want more access to the feature, along with extra benefits such as premium customer support for their devices. The Conversation Focus is designed to make face-to-face conversations easier. It makes the voice of the person in front of the user louder, so they can hear better while using other features on the smart glasses, such as having notifications read aloud.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg introduced the feature during a product event last September. Many people praised it because they believed it could make the glasses more helpful for people with hearing difficulties. However, Meta says Conversation Focus is not a hearing aid or a medical device. Meta's Ray Ban smart glasses are currently the most popular smart glasses on the market. Other companies, including Snapchat and Apple are also working on similar products to compete with Meta. However, the smart glasses have also faced criticism. Some people are worried about privacy and how the cameras and AI features could affect the privacy of others. Some women have said they were recorded by people wearing Meta smart glasses without their knowledge or permission. In some cases, they only found out after videos of themselves appeared online. Meta says its smart glasses should never be used to harass or abuse people. The company also says the glasses have a small light that turns on while recording, so others know when the camera is being used. If the light is covered, the glasses are designed to stop recording. Even with these safety features, Meta continues to face concerns about privacy and how the glasses are being used.
