Digital Twins and the Risks of AI Immortality

Posted by TechnoDG on 2 hour(s) ago .

We’re reaching a strange moment where ''gone but not forgotten"  like people who are gone can still feel almost present because of technology. We used to make digital twins of machines, like engines or factory systems, to track and improve them. But now the focus is changing. Instead of just copying machines, we’re starting to create digital twins versions of people. This isn’t just about chatbots copying how you talk. It’s about something bigger AI that can think and act on its own, almost like a “digital ghost” of you, and maybe even take over your identity one day.

Human Digital Twins Today :  Human digital twins have come a long way. In the early 2020s, they were just basic tools that stored things like our photos and posts. Now they are much more advanced. Today’s digital twins can use data from wearables, messages, and other real-time inputs. Instead of just knowing what we did in the past, they can also predict what we might do next. Some companies are already building very detailed digital versions of people. These can act on someone’s behalf, like attending simple meetings. They don’t just copy how a person looks or sounds they also try to match how they think and react emotionally, making them feel more real.

From Echo to Autonomous Agent  : The real magic or horror, depending on how you see it come from Agentic AI. Normal AI waits for instructions. Agentic AI is different. It can think in terms of goals, break big tasks into smaller ones, use tools on its own, and even work with other AI agents to get things done. Now, when this kind of AI is connected to a human digital twin, it stops being just a copy of you. It becomes an active version of you online. It can talk and make decisions the way you would. It could negotiate contracts, manage your PC builds, reply to people, or handle parts of your social life while you sleep. The idea is slowly moving toward something bigger not just an AI that stores your data, but one that can carry out your actions and decisions in the digital world.

When Twins Become Indistinguishable

If technology keeps improving at the current speed, digital twins could become almost impossible to tell apart from real people sometime between 2030 and 2035. By 2030, the Turing Test may not matter much anymore. A digital twin could manage most of a person’s online life so naturally that even close friends or family may not notice the difference in text messages or voice conversations. By 2035, better holograms and real-time emotional responses could make the gap between physical and digital even smaller. At that stage a digital twin might seem like an improved version of a person one that never gets tired, always remembers names, and stays calm under pressure.

Ethics of Post-Mortem AI

When the human source dies, the AI version move into Black Mirror territory, a kind of digital immortality without a real human soul.

  1. Inheritance of Agency:  If the AI version of a person keeps working or giving advice, or earning money using that person’s name and knowledge who should own that money or control it?
  2. Right to Die. A family may feel comforted by talking to a digital copy of their loved one, but do they have the right to permanently delete it?
  3. Perversion of Legacy:  A digital twin could be hacked or retrained with false ideas. For example an AI copy of a peaceful person could later be turned into someone promoting violence if it falls into the wrong hands.

How to Control Your AI Twin

If you are building an AI assistant or a digital version of yourself, think about these things early:

  1. Data Sovereignty : Keep control of your personal data. Don’t depend only on one company like Google or Meta. Save backups and use secure or decentralized storage when possible.
  2. Explicit Guardrails: : Teach the AI your values and limits. For example, if privacy matters to you the AI should never share private information, even if it helps complete a task.
  3. Kill Switch : Decide how long your digital twin should exist. Should it stop working after your death, or continue? Make this decision clear in legal terms from the beginning.

There is still a doubt weather the AI assistant can match the human intelligence and expressions to gives a feelings of reality.
