Google to expand Play Store age-verification tool globally: What it means for users

Posted by TechnoDG on 3 hour(s) ago .

Google is expanding its age verification system to the Play Store in countries around the world as governments put more pressure on app stores to check users ages. The company announced that its Play Age Signal API will be available globally, including in the US by the end of 2026. The system helps app developers confirm a user's age while protecting their privacy. Unlike some age verification methods, Play Age Signal API does not ask users to upload an ID or take a selfie. Instead, it works with Google's Family Link app, where parents can set age ranges for their children's managed accounts. For example, if parents set their child's age range to 16–17 years then the child will only be able to download apps and content that are suitable for that age group. Google said these age ranges will automatically change as children grow older.

Google's decision to offer this age verification system to Android developers around the world is important because many governments want app stores, such as Google Play Store and Apple's App Store to verify the ages of their users. Several US states, including Texas, Louisiana, and Utah have introduced new rules that require people to show their ID before accessing adult content online but  privacy experts warn that more age checks on the internet could reduce online anonymity and make it harder for people to stay private online.

However, some people are questioning whether Google’s Play Age Signal API will really stop children from accessing apps that are not suitable for their age. Users have to share their age information willingly and some parents may not set up age limits for their children. Children may also avoid these checks by creating new accounts and entering false ages. Also, app developers are not required to use the Play Age Signal API.  Lastly, it is still unclear whether this new system will help Google meet the age verification rules introduced in different countries. The Play Store already has a content rating system for apps.
