OpenAI announced on 28th of April 2025 that ChatGPT is now helping users to find products on the web, enhancing its challenge to Google amid regulatory pressure of the search giant's market power.
The new shopping capabilities only blurs the line between AI chatbots and search engines as OpenAI looks to expand its competition against Google in a market the latter has dominated for decades.
"Search has become one of our most popular and fastest growing features with over 1 billion web searches just in the last week," the San Francisco-based company wrote in a post on X.
Introduced on Monday 28th April 2025, the update allows consumers search and compare products through natural conversation, ultimately connect directly with the merchant within the same channel to make a purchase. "Instead of scrolling through pages of results, you can simply stat a conversation," OpenAI's post said, also noting that users could ask follow-up questions or compare items.
ChatGPT's shopping feature is focused on three categories - fashion, beauty, and home electronics. The product recommendations are personalized and come from the web, not from ads, according to OpenAI.
As counter increasing from AI chatbots emerge, Google has implemented its own Gemini assistant into the search results, offering AI-generated responses above standard website links.
Things heated up last week when an OpenAI executive testified the company would consider buying Chrome, if Google were forced to sell the browser as part of an ongoing US antitrust case.
