Jeff Dean who is a Google’s longtime chief scientist has started a new AI company called Discovery Loop. He started it with his former Google colleagues Sanjay Ghemawat, Oriol Vinyals, and Quoc Le. All three recently worked in senior AI and engineering roles at Google. Jeff Dean wrote, "We are founding Discovery Loop a Public Benefit Corporation whose mission is to automate machine learning, science, and engineering to accelerate discoveries and progress." He added that the four founders have worked together for between 14 and 30 years, helping build Google's AI models, products and computing infrastructure.
According to Discovery Loop’s website the company is working on AI systems that can help with the different steps of scientific research. These include coming up with ideas, planning experiments, studying the results, and using those results to improve the next experiment. The goal is to speed up progress in AI, science, and engineering.
The company also says it wants to build AI systems that can help researchers from the beginning to the end of their work. It will first focus on machine learning and later move into other areas of science and engineering. At the same time Demis Hassabis will become Alphabet’s new chief scientist. He will also step down as CEO of Google DeepMind and take on the role of chairman, according to a memo he sent to staff.
