Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates says that AI needs stronger rules to prevent its misuse and reduce its risks. He believes AI should have safety rules just like cars, planes, and medicines. Bill Gates wrote on X that, "Just as we regulate planes, cars, and medicines, we need safeguards that help us realize AI's incredible potential while reducing the risks.” Bill Gates also said that rules may not solve every problem but they can help stop people from using AI for harmful purposes. “They won’t eliminate every harm, but they can help prevent misuse by bad actors,” he added. He also said that more work is needed to make AI safe. “We’re not where we need to be yet and this deserves much more of our attention."
However, Gates believes that some warnings about AI destroying humanity may be exaggerated. Gates warned that AI could cause serious harm if it is not properly controlled. Last month, he said, “AI is certainly powerful enough to drive events that, you know, cause a billion deaths.”
He also said that AI could be more dangerous than cars, planes, and medicines, even though these already have safety rules. He added, "But say, compared to cars, or planes, or drugs, all things that I think we're pleased that we have significant regulatory capability to try and keep people safe, this is more dangerous than any of those,” he explained. “And so there are some grim possibilities if we don't maintain control. And I do think the industry is doing its job to raise the alarm bell."Atlast, Gates believes that the world needs to find a balance between developing AI and keeping people safe.
Microsoft President Also Calls for AI Rules
Microsoft President Brad Smith has also called for stronger AI rules. He said that everyday products have safety checks but AI does not have the same level of regulation. Brad Smith told the BBC that, "Right now, your washing machine is subject to more safety rules than AI. Every carton of milk that you see in the grocery store is subject to safety rules and inspection." He called AI both a "tool and a weapon" and said that countries need to work together to create rules for the technology. "Let's get started today," he added.
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has also warned people not to trust AI models blindly. He said that as AI becomes more powerful and gets access to more data, companies must be ready for possible risks. Technology companies and governments are still debating how AI should be controlled. OpenAI and Anthropic have called for stronger safety rules, while Meta and Nvidia have taken different positions on the issue. US President Donald Trump has also warned that strict AI rules could slow down the United States and give China an advantage in the race to develop AI.
Lastly, AI continues to grow, the challenge is to allow the technology to develop while making sure it does not put people at risk.
