Microsoft is changing Copilot into a single AI app which combines chat, coding tools, and AI agents all together. The new version was introduced on 25th September 2026, as the company tries to make Copilot a bigger part of how people work. The new Copilot brings several new features that was previously offered separately into one app. It will now compete with AI tools such as ChatGPT and Claude, while Microsoft focuses strongly on business users.
The redesigned Copilot has three main tabs: Home, Code, and Autopilot.
Microsoft had already made several changes to Copilot but this is the first time it is bringing consumer and business AI features together in one place. The company hopes this will help Copilot become more useful for people who already use Microsoft products at work. Jared Spataro, who is the Microsoft's chief marketing officer of AI at work said, “Just as office defined work for the PC era, the new Copilot is built to define it for the AI era.”
The new Home and Code tabs will first be available to people in Microsoft's Frontier early access program. Autopilot will enter private preview later this month of October. The Code tab will also be available in preview for Microsoft 365 Premium and Pro subscribers later this year. Some parts of the new Copilot including Cowork, Code, and Autopilot, will use usage based pricing. People with a regular Copilot license will continue to get Copilot in Chat as well as in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams.
