Google Gemini Can Now Call Businesses for You

Google has introduced a new Gemini feature called “Call for Me” that can call businesses on behalf of users. For example, users can ask Gemini to call a store and check if a product is available, call a restaurant to make a reservation, or even contact a doctor’s office to ask about an appointment. The feature is still being tested and is currently available only to Pixel 11 users in the US who have a Gemini subscription. Users also need to have the beta version of Google’s Phone app. Gemini uses (users) your own phone number to make the call. Once the call connects it also tells the business that it is an AI assistant calling on your behalf. It can also go through automated phone menus and wait on hold on users behalf.

Users can see a live transcript of the conversation and take over the call whenever they want. Gemini can also share some of your personal information with the business, but only after you give permission. Google says the feature is being tested on a small scale because real phone conversations can be unpredictable and complicated.

 Google’s Earlier AI Calling Features

This is not Google’s first attempt at AI powered phone calls. A few years ago, Google showed a feature where it’s Assistant could call a salon and book an appointment. Later, Google introduced “Ask for Me,” which could call businesses to ask about prices and services. Lastly, google also offers features like “Hold for Me,” which waits on hold until a real person answers and “Direct My Call,” which helps users navigate automated phone menus. With “Call for Me,” Google is taking another step toward AI assistants that can handle everyday tasks for users instead of making them do everything themselves.
