Search Live, a new voice interface, has been launched by Google which allows users to have conversational, back-and-forth interactions with Google Search through Google app. It is now available for Android and iOS users in the US, who opted into the AI Mode experiment in Labs. A traditional search has been turned into spoken dialogue powered by a custom version of Gemini.
Users can open the Google app and click on the new Live icon to access the Search Live, then they can ask questions via voice input for which the system generates AI audio responses and shows relevant web links on the screen. The conversation stays active, which allows natural follow-up questions without restarting the search process. For instance, a user can ask about packing tips for travel, continue to ask specific questions about preventing wrinkles or organizing luggages.
Multitasking with background conversations
The feature runs in the background and provides users with the ability to carry on conversations while working with other apps. A transcript option allows users to see text versions of the responses and even switch back and forth between the voice and typed interaction. It satisfies the increasing demand for hands-free query functionality, especially for those who are multitasking or on the go.
Search Live pairs with Google’s established search infrastructure with the advance voice technology, maintaining the reliability users expect from Google’s Search while adding conversational capabilities. The system uses Google’s query fan-out technique to bring diverse web content, although concerns have been raised as to whether this approach might reduce traffic to original sources, as users may receive complete information without clicking through to the website.
Coming soon, visual search integration
Google is planning to expand Search Live in the coming months with camera-based interactions, so users will be able to physically show the system real-time visuals while maintaining voice conversations. This enhancement, announced at Google I/O event earlier this year. It will enable users to receive help with visual problems like math equations or real-world objects they encounter.
