OpenAI, Anthropic are starting service companies, it is good news for Indian IT sector

AI companies like Anthropic and OpenAI are now moving into the  SaaS which is a software as a services. At first  this may seem like a threat to Indian IT companies such as TCS (Tata Consultancy Service ) and Infosys. Many people in the IT industry worry that AI could reduce the need for software services. But this change could actually help Indian IT companies and their employees. Whenever companies like OpenAI, Google, or Anthropic launch something new there is fear that it may affect the earnings of big IT firms. However, their recent move into AI-based services may create new opportunities instead of only creating competition.

As more businesses begin using AI, Indian IT companies can help clients use, manage, and customize these tools. This can create more demand for skilled IT workers and bring new project opportunities for companies like TCS and Infosys. To support this growth, OpenAI has partnered with several financial firms to create a new company called The Deployment Company. It works as a SaaS business that helps companies adopt AI tools more easily. Anthropic has also made a similar partnership with firms like BlackRock to help mid-sized companies use AI solutions faster.

Indian IT industry gets validation : One big challenge with any new technology especially AI, is helping companies actually use it properly. This is where Indian IT and SaaS companies play an important role. By entering the SaaS space, OpenAI and Anthropic have indirectly shown how valuable companies like TCS and Infosys are. They have made it clear that even in the era of AI companies’ help in technology setup, support, and management, SaaS company will continue to be important and maybe even more than before. Vishal Sirohi, who is a co-founder of Island Computing, an Indian AI infrastructure company, said “The last mile is still the hard work. Integration with systems of record, change management, security review, regulated-industry deployment and more importantly operating systems over time.”

The pie will be big enough for all : There is still a big question if OpenAI and Anthropic are entering the same space as TCS and Infosys, how can Indian IT companies benefit from this and the answer lies in how huge the AI market is going to become. AI will need to be used by millions of companies around the world both big and small and this will have to happen very quickly. Because of this massive demand, there will be enough opportunities for everyone. OpenAI and Anthropic may take a big share of the market, but experienced Indian IT companies like TCS and Infosys can also benefit in a major way.

The important thing for Indian tech companies is to adapt fast. Sumed Marwaha, who is a Managing Director of  Ahead India, says “SaaS companies that stand still will struggle. SaaS companies that redesign their products around AI native workflows and agentic experiences are likely to see more demand, not less.” There are already signs that Indian IT companies are moving fast in the AI space. Earlier this year, Infosys partnered with Anthropic to do the same kind of AI integration and support work that these new SaaS companies are expected to provide in the US. Sumed Marwaha explained that Anthropic provides the AI technology, while Infosys brings years of industry experience, strong system integration skills, and trusted relationships with clients, especially in highly regulated industries.

OpenAI has similar arrangements with TCS and Infosys that helps integrate its coding agent Codex into systems of client companies. It is still too early to know exactly how AI-based SaaS services will grow in the future. But right now, the future of Indian IT companies like TCS, Infosys, and Wipro does not look as bad as many people first thought. In fact, the recent moves by OpenAI and Anthropic show that the work Indian IT companies have been doing for years is still very important. These AI companies are indirectly proving that businesses will continue to need help in setting up, managing, and integrating AI tools with their existing systems. An AI tool like Claude Cowork may be powerful on its own, but companies cannot fully use it unless it works smoothly with their internal systems and processes. This is where Indian IT companies can play a major role and create new opportunities for themselves.
