Intelligence agencies from the Five Eyes alliance have warned that powerful AI could soon be used to launch serious cyber attacks on governments and businesses. They say this threat could become real within a few months and are urging leaders to take action now before it's too late. The intelligence agencies of Australia, the US, the UK, New Zealand, and Canada have made a rare public warning. This comes shortly after the Trump administration stopped people from other countries from using Fable which is a new AI model developed by the tech company Anthropic.
In a statement the Five Eyes intelligence agencies said that AI will help improve cyber security but it will also make cyberattacks faster and more difficult to stop. They warned that the newest AI models could change both cyber attacks and cyber defence much sooner than expected. According to the agencies, this change is only a few months away, not years. They also said that strong cyber security is now essential for protecting businesses, maintaining customer trust, and ensuring long-term growth. The cybersecurity agencies said that rapid improvements in AI will make it easier for hackers to carry out faster and more advanced cyberattacks. They stressed that dealing with these threats is not just the job of cybersecurity experts. Businesses, governments, and the public all need to work together. The agencies also said that, “Cyber risk can no longer be treated as a purely technical issue. This is a core business risk and leadership responsibility.”
The Five Eyes statement did not mention any AI company or model by name but many people believe it refers to Anthropic's latest AI tools. One of these tools is called Fable 5, which is designed to be more widely available than the company's earlier model named Mythos. Mythos is a powerful AI system that can find security weaknesses in computer networks. Because it could also be misused by hackers, access to Mythos is limited to trusted organizations and approved companies. Both of Anthropic’s models were suspended for use by “foreign nationals” in June by the US government, which cited advice by national security authorities.
Olivia Shen, who is the Director of the Strategic Technologies Program with the United States Studies Centre at the University of Sydney said that, “I think we have to anticipate that the next Mythos or the next Fable is just around the corner.” Lastly, in March 2026, the Albanese government made Anthropic the first company to join its national AI plan. Under this agreement, Anthropic agreed to share updates about its AI development with the government and support safe use of AI. Although the agreement is not legally binding.
