Uk Prime Minister Keir Starmer said that apps like Instagram, Facebook and TikTok should do more to stop young people from spending too much time endlessly scrolling videos. Like other countries, it is also looking ways to limit kids’ use of social media. They are testing ideas like bans, time limits, and curfews to see how it affects sleep, family time, and schoolwork.
Uk Prime Minister Starmer told, that the government is thinking about banning social media for kids under 16. He said the bigger problem is how these apps are designed to keep people scrolling for too long which can be addictive, and he believes that it needs to stop. He also mentioned that many parents want the government to take action. Australia has already introduced a ban for under-16s, and countries like Greece and Indonesia are doing something similar.
The UK government said that over 45000 people have already shared their views on children’s online safety. They also added that anyone who still wants to take part can do so before the May 26 deadline.
Technology Secretary Liz Kendall said, that they want to hear from parents who are worried about how much time their children spend online and what they watch. She also said they want to hear from teenagers, because they understand best what it’s like growing up with social media. And they are asking families to share their opinions on things like curfews, AI chatbots, and features that can be addictive.
