Instagram limits the reach for AI influencers without ‘AI labels’

Instagram is taking action against fake influencers who look like real people. The platform said that it will change how it labels AI-generated profiles. It will also reduce the reach of accounts that use AI-generated people without telling their followers. Instagram is making changes to deal with fake influencers created using AI. The platform now wants users to clearly know when they are looking at an AI-generated person instead of a real one. Instagram has changed its old “AI creator” label to “AI-generated profile.” The company says the new name will make it easier for people to understand that the person shown on the profile was created using AI. The new label will appear on posts, reels, and stories from AI influencers. Instagram also plans to place an “AI-generated profile” badge under the account’s username and display name. Accounts that do not properly disclose that they use AI-generated people could face penalties. Their content may be shown to fewer people who do not already follow the account, including in reels, explore, and feed recommendations.

Instagram said many users were unhappy when they thought they were following a real person and later discovered that the person was actually AI-generated.  Instagram wrote, “As generative AI becomes a bigger part of how people create, we’ve heard that people don’t like seeing a profile that seems human, only to find out later that the person featured is AI-generated".The move comes as AI-generated content and virtual influencers are becoming more common on social media. Instagram has also faced criticism over an AI tool that allowed people to create images using other people's likenesses without clear permission. Meta later removed the feature. The announcement also comes after Meta agreed to an $18 billion settlement with U.S. states and territories over claims that Facebook and Instagram harmed children. As part of the deal, Meta will make changes to improve online safety for kids, including daily time limits and nighttime restrictions.
