Hackers Use AI Deepfake Voice And Video To Steal Money/Data. Verify Before Sharing Any Information

Posted by TechnoDG on 5 hour(s) ago .

Nowadays, AI voice cloning and deepfake videos are becoming more common. Hackers can copy someone's voice in just 30 seconds or even create fake live video calls. They use these tricks to scare people gain their trust and steal money or personal information.

Most Common AI Deepfake Scam:

  • Fake Emergency Calls : Scammers pretend to be your family member or friend. They may say they had an accident, were arrested, or need money urgently.
  • Fake CEO or Boss Calls : Hackers copy the voice of a company leader and ask employees to transfer money or share confidential information.
  • Fake Bank or Government Officials : Scammers act as bank staff, police officers, or tax officials. They ask for OTPs, KYC details, passwords, or immediate payments.
  • Fake Video Calls : Criminals may use deepfake video calls to collect your face data or trick facial verification systems.

Major Red Flags to identify AI Deepfakes

  • If someone asks you to send money right away, be careful.
  • If there are long or strange pauses during the conversation, it could be fake.
  • If the person's eyes blink oddly or their lips do not match their words, it may be a deepfake.
  • If the voice sounds robotic, flat, or suddenly changes, it could be AI-generated.
  • If the person tells you not to hang up or talk to anyone else, it is a warning sign.

How to Verify Before You Share

  • Hang up and call back : If someone asks for money, passwords or personal details, end the call. Call them back using the phone number already saved in your contacts. Never trust the number that called you.
  • Use a family safe word : Create a secret word or phrase with your family. If someone calls with an emergency ask for the safe word to confirm it is really them.
  • Check through another method : If you get an urgent request on a video call or messaging app, confirm it using a different way, such as a phone call, text message, or by contacting a trusted family member or colleague.
  • Watch for warning signs : Deepfake videos may have lip-sync problems, strange mouth movements, unusual blinking, or sudden changes in voice quality.

Lastly, if you suspect you are being targeted by an AI scam or if you have already shared information or money, take immediate action. Immediately call the National Cyber Crime Helpline at 1930 or report the incident on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal.
