Smart glasses are everywhere: How a new wave of apps make it easier to spot them

The use of smart glasses with cameras and AI is growing and this is creating new privacy concerns. One of the biggest concerns is that knowing when someone nearby is recording. An iOS app called Zuckoff has recently become popular. The app is free and can detect smart glasses such as Ray Ban Meta and Snap Spectacles as well as similar devices. It can tell users when someone wearing smart glasses enters the room and how close the glasses are. However, the app cannot tell if the person is actually recording or using AI on their smart glasses. Zuckoff is one of several apps that can detect nearby smart glasses.  Apps like Zuckoff are becoming more popular as people are becoming more worried about the privacy risks of AI smart glasses. Ray Ban Meta AI glasses, for example have received criticism because people are concerned that they could be used to secretly watch or record others. Some people have even started calling them “pervert glasses.”

Today’s smart glasses can record, live-stream, and process videos without clearly informing people nearby. There have also been many videos on social media showing people using smart glasses to record pranks or approach women without their permission. Zuckoff’s developer, Pawel Szydlowski also raised concerns about this issue. He said that people now often post everything online, even when the people in the videos have not agreed to it or have given any consent. Some smart glasses have a small light that shows when the camera is recording. These features are meant to protect people’s privacy. However, some users have found ways to turn off or avoid these recording lights. They can do this by changing the software or finding ways to bypass the camera’s LED indicator. Apps like Zuckoff use Bluetooth to find nearby devices. The app scans for Bluetooth signals around you and looks for things like device IDs, system information, and other details that can help identify smart glasses.

However Bluetooth signal strength can only give an approximate idea of how far away the smart glasses are. It cannot tell you exactly where they are. The Bluetooth signal is also usually strongest when the glasses are turned on, paired, or taken out of their case. At other times, the signal may become weaker or even stop being detected, even if the glasses are being used to record someone. One problem with these detection apps is that they only tell users when smart glasses are nearby. They do not really explain what someone can do with that information to protect their privacy, other than leaving the area. Even with these limitations, Zuckoff has still attracted a lot of users. Since it was released in August 2026. The free iOS app has had more than 2000 sign ups. It also has a paid subscription that costs $10 a year. With the subscription, the app can keep checking for nearby smart glasses in the background, even when the app is not open. More companies are also entering the smart glasses market, including Apple. The company has reportedly been working on smart glasses for several years. However, this could be difficult, especially after recently leaked videos reportedly suggested that Apple is also working on AirPods with built in cameras.
