OpenAI has announced that its AI coding assistant, Codex is now coming to smartphones through the ChatGPT app. This allows developers to manage and monitor their coding tasks directly from their phones.
The new feature is currently available as a preview for all ChatGPT plans user on both Android and iPhone. With this update, users can check coding progress, review results, approve commands, switch AI models, handle multiple coding tasks, and start new projects without sitting at their computers. OpenAI said this update is not just for controlling one task remotely. Users can now manage all their coding activities from their phones in one place. This launch is part of OpenAI’s bigger plan to develop advanced AI coding tools that can perform programming tasks automatically with a very little effort.
Last month, OpenAI introduced background support for Codex on desktop systems, allowing it to continue coding tasks autonomously while users work on other things. The company also launched a Chrome extension that lets Codex operate directly within live browser sessions. These show growing competition in the AI coding assistant market, especially between OpenAI and Anthropic, as earlier this year, it also introduced Remote Control for Claude Code allowing developers to remotely monitor and guide coding tasks performed by the tool.
Over the last year AI coding tools have grown very fast. Many companies are building tools that can write code, fix mistakes, and make coding easier to manage. Anthropic’s Claude Code has become popular among developers and businesses, while OpenAI’s Codex is continuing to grow on desktop, web, and mobile platforms.
