Google is testing a new shopping feature in India that could let users buy products from Flipkart directly through Gemini and AI Mode in Google Search. The feature is currently available to a small number of users and works with a limited number of Flipkart products, mainly smartphones, electronics and mobile accessories. Some Flipkart products shown in Gemini and AI Mode now have a “Buy” button. When a user clicks on it, a Flipkart checkout page opens within the AI interface, so users do not have to leave the chat to complete their purchase.
According to TechCrunch, Google plans to expand the feature in October, ahead of India’s festive shopping season. The move shows Google is trying to make Gemini more than just a tool for finding and recommending products. It could also help users complete purchases directly through AI. AI companies are increasingly looking at ways to let their tools not only answer questions but also take actions for users. Other companies such as, OpenAI and Meta are also working on shopping features for their AI platforms.
However, these AI shopping tools need access to websites and online services to work properly. This has also raised privacy and security concerns. Recently, Amazon blocked Meta’s AI agent, Muse from accessing its shopping website, saying there were concerns around privacy and security.
