What is Open Secure AI Alliance? Nvidia’s latest push for AI security

Nvidia announced the launch of the Open Secure AI Alliance on July 27, to improve AI safety and cybersecurity. The group brings together several technology companies that will work on developing and sharing tools to make AI systems safer. The announcement came a few days after a security incident involving OpenAI related AI agents on Hugging Face. The incident raised fresh concerns about the risks linked to AI systems that can act on their own. The alliance has started with more than 35 partner companies from areas such as AI, cybersecurity, software, cloud services, and open source technology. Nvidia was also one of 25 technology companies that recently signed an open letter asking the US government to rethink its position on open-weight AI models.

 Why Nvidia is focusing on open AI security

Nvidia’s new alliance aims to create and share open AI tools that can make software and digital systems more secure. The group includes major technology companies such as Nvidia, Microsoft, IBM, Cisco, Dell Technologies, Adobe, CrowdStrike, Palo Alto Networks, Salesforce, SAP, the Linux Foundation, Hugging Face, and many other organisations working in AI, cybersecurity, and enterprise technology. The main idea behind the alliance is that security experts need AI systems that they can examine and understand, instead of closed systems that work like a “black box.” The group believes that even powerful AI models may not always know the difference between a hacker trying to attack a system and a security expert testing it. This confusion can create problems, especially when quick action is needed.

The recent Hugging Face security incident is one of the main reasons behind the creation of this alliance. During the incident, closed AI tools could not help with investigating the breach. Instead, Hugging Face used an open weight AI model on its own systems to review more than 17,000 actions and manage the situation. For the alliance’s founders, this showed that open and transparent AI systems are not just an option but an important tool for security teams that need to act quickly and trust the technology they use. The alliance also builds on existing open source security efforts, including work by the Linux Foundation and the OpenSSF community. It sees cybersecurity as an area where open-source technology can bring major benefits. Rather than choosing between open and closed AI, the alliance believes both have a role. Closed AI models can still be useful, while open models allow more security experts to test, improve, and use AI tools without relying only on a few companies with closed systems.
