Samsung's first Android XR headset may finally be close to its official launch. After months of appearances at different events, leaks and teaser clips, a new report out of South Korea suggests that Samsung will bring the headset—currently codenamed Project Moohan in September in its home nation. If this is actually true, the headset will debut in South Korea on October, with a global rollout expected to follow soon after. Of course, Samsung hasn't released any of this information yet.
This will be the first Extended Reality (XR) headset from Samsung, and it's being developed in partnership with Google. The headset will run Android XR-based, a special version of Android optimized for mixed-reality devices. Android XR is the result of a partnership between Google and Samsung, much like their collaboration on the latest versions of Wear OS for smartwatches. The new platform is also expected to come with built-in Gemini AI, giving users access to smart tools and context information right inside their headset. For example, imagine using Google Maps in a 3D interface or receiving AI-generated assistance while driving or doing some work in XR.
The headset will be internally powered by Qualcomm's XR2+ Gen 2 chip, which is reportedly built on Samsung's own 4nm process. This should help deliver smooth performance as well as power consumption in a balance, both of which are key for wearable devices.
The headset has been seen publicly a few times, even though it has not been released yet. Samsung showed off early prototypes earlier this year at MWC 2024 and the Galaxy S25 reveal, and is planning on once again teasing it during its July Unpacked event alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Flip 7.
The device's feature is said to support both mixed and complete virtual reality experiences. Samsung also claims to be developing the headset to be light and comforting while wearing, though specific design remains unknown. Rumour also hints at a sleek form factor that is more user-friendly than heavier alternatives.
Of course, all of this comes as heightened competition in the XR market. Apple's Vision Pro has already made the headlines with its high-end strategy, but also caused disapproval for its price and design. Samsung may be aiming to strike a better balance, offering high-end performance and good user experience, at a reasonable price.
That said, nothing is set in stone until Samsung makes it official. But if the recent reports are accurate, the wait won't be longer as to see what Project Moohan is really all about.
