WhatsApp will soon utilize Meta AI to summarize unread messages: Here's how it works

The new WhatsApp Beta for Android update contains a feature that can automatically summarize unread messages with a single click. Here's how it works.

WhatsApp is the world's most widely used instant messaging app, owned by Meta with over a billion users worldwide. The app developers recently began testing a new feature that allows users to easily catch up with unread messages by offering them a summary of conversations with the help of Meta AI.

According to a new report by WABetaInfo, the website that monitors new and upcoming features in WhatsApp, the new feature is currently available for those on WhatsApp beta for Android 2.25.18.18, which can be accessed on the Google Play Store. The report stated that these AI generated message summaries are privacy-driven, meaning all your messages will stay private, and secure and work with both individual and group chats.

Beta testers can activate Private Processing from the application settings to receive AI-based message summaries. After activation, users will be greeted with a specific button that will appear when a user receives a certain number new messages in their conversations.

When users press the new button, WhatsApp will send a request to the Private Processing system that will respond with a summarized version of unseen messages without storing any information.

In similarity to Apple's Private Cloud Compute, Private Processing is a system which guarantees the data is processed without being routed to WhatsApp or Meta servers. In addition, developers say no one, including Meta, can read or access the processed data and that user requests remain anonymous and cannot be linked back to their identity.

Also, the new AI-generated message summarizing feature is entirely optional, so users who are not comfortable sharing their data can choose to opt out of it.
