Why Gen Z Is Struggling to Find Jobs in US

Posted by TechnoDG on 1 hour(s) ago .

The unemployment rate for workers born between 1997 and 2012, commonly known as Gen Z is around 8.3%, which is almost twice the national unemployment rate of 4.2%. This is becoming a serious concern because it can affect future talent pipelines, leadership development, and the economy. Gen Z is often described as a highly educated and digital-native generation but many young people are still struggling to find their first job.

According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) March 2026 survey, only 21.6% new graduates are fully ready for the workplace. Around 71.2% HR leaders believe that only some new graduates are ready and that they still need to improve th0eir skills, while about 7% new graduates are not ready to be hired. One of the biggest problems is the lack of work experience. Many organizations now expect candidates to have at least four to five years of experience even for some entry level positions. This creates a difficult situation for Gen Z graduates because they need experience to get a job, and  a job to gain that experience.

Another major reason is the rapid growth of AI and automation. Tasks that were traditionally given to junior employees are now being handled by AI tools, automation software, and self-service platforms. For example, companies can now use AI for writing, research, and other basic tasks. Many organizations are also trying to operate with smaller teams and get more work done with fewer employees. From a business perspective, this can increase productivity, reduce errors, and save time, leading to which, there are fewer opportunities for young workers to enter the workforce.

In 2024 survey in America, 98% HR leaders said that there company are lacking talent. According to the Strada Institute for the Future of Work and the Burning Glass Institute, more than half of recent four-year college graduates are underemployed one year after graduation, based on their “Talent Disrupted” report. This means many graduates are working in jobs that do not fully match their education or skills. A 2024 study conducted by Hult Hult International Business School, which surveyed 800 HR leaders, revealed that 30% of leaders would rather leave a position unfilled than hire a recent graduate (Gen Z).

According to Diversity and inclusion A December 2023 survey from Intelligent.com revealed that 38% of 800 US managers, directors, and executives avoid hiring recent college graduates in favour of older employees. In fact, 46% of them said they are willing to hire an overqualified older employee just so they could avoid working with someone younger. According to the Intelligent.com survey, for one in five employers, recent college graduates appear to be unprepared when it comes to job interviews. Those who did end up hiring a recent grad also revealed negative experiences while working with them, with 63% of employers saying they can't handle their workload. Others pointed out the following issues with Gen Z staff, frequently late to work (61%), often miss deadlines and assignments (59%), don't dress professionally (57%), frequently late to meetings (53%), deliver poor quality work (53%),  use inappropriate language (51%), Difficult to manage (50%),  don't get along with co-workers (41%).  As a result of these behaviours, 47% of the respondents admitted that they've fired a recent college graduate. While 89% said that they don’t want to hire new graduates.

According to a Forbes blog post, many managers are becoming less interested in hiring Gen Z workers because they feel that some young workers lack important soft skills. These skills are not only about technical knowledge or education. They are about how a person communicates, works with others, solves problems, and handles different situations at work. These skills are usually developed through real work experience, dealing with different people, and learning from real-life situations rather than only through classroom education. Because of this skills gap, some companies are hiring fewer college graduates. This is not only affecting Gen Z but is also creating wider problems for the American workforce. When young graduates struggle to get their first jobs, they have fewer chances to gain the real-world experience needed to build these important skills.

Another 37% of HR leaders in America said they would rather use robots or AI than hire Gen Z workers for certain types of work. Leading technology executives have also predicted that AI could speed up the decline of junior-level hiring in the coming years. The problem is that these junior level jobs were not only about completing basic tasks but they were also an important way for young employees to learn, gain experience, and develop their careers. According to BambooHR BLOG, in the past, graduates could start with an entry-level job, learn from experienced employees, gain skills, and gradually move into higher positions. Today, many of those opportunities are being automated, outsourced, or removed. As a result, Gen Z is being asked to have experience before they are given the opportunity to gain that experience. AI may help companies become more productive, but if too many entry-level jobs disappear, young workers may lose the opportunity to get their foot in the door and build the experience needed for future careers and leadership roles.

Overall, the problem is not simply that Gen Z is unwilling or unable to work. Many of these skills take time and real workplace experience to develop. If companies continue to reduce entry-level opportunities, young workers may have even fewer chances to develop the communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and other skills that employers are looking for.
